How to Check if a Job Posting Is Genuine

A job can look professional and still be copied, expired or fraudulent. This checklist helps you verify the opportunity before you upload a resume, share personal information or travel for an interview.

Quick rule: treat the employer's official careers page or an employer-authorized recruitment portal as the final source. A social post, forwarded message or job board can help you discover a role, but it should not be the only evidence that the role exists.

Six checks to perform before applying

  1. Check the official company careers website.
Start from the company's main website or careers page. Compare the domain with the link you received. A similar-looking domain with extra words, unusual spelling or a free hosting address needs extra caution.
  2. Look for a job or requisition ID.
Many employers publish a reference number. Search that ID on the employer's own careers site. If the same ID points to a different role, location or status, stop and re-check the source.
  3. Verify the posting or closing date.
Old job pages can remain searchable after hiring closes. Check whether the employer still accepts applications and whether the page shows a closing date, event date or active application form.
  4. Avoid payment requests.
Be cautious when someone asks for money for registration, interviews, training, equipment, background checks or a guaranteed offer. Verify any unusual request independently with the employer.
  5. Compare role details across sources.
Company name, title, location, qualification, experience and application process should broadly match. A copied listing may change salary, eligibility or contact details to attract applicants.
  6. Use the official application link.
Before entering personal information, inspect the final destination. If the employer uses an ATS such as Workday, Greenhouse or another platform, the employer's official careers page should normally lead you there.

Example: what HD Careers would verify

Example listing

Software Development Engineer — Fresher

Job ID: EX12345
Location: Bengaluru
Source: Employer careers website

Why this looks stronger
Company-owned source is available.
Job ID is present.
Role/location match the application page.
Application link resolves to the employer's approved hiring flow.

What HD Careers cannot guarantee

We can verify what a source shows at a point in time, but employers can change or close roles later. A verified date is therefore evidence of a check, not a permanent guarantee. Always review the employer page immediately before applying.

What to do if something looks wrong

Do not continue just because a company logo is present. Save the URL, compare it with the employer's official site and report suspicious or expired HD Careers listings through our Contact page.

Never send passwords, OTPs, bank credentials or unnecessary identity documents to HD Careers. Applications happen on employer or authorized recruitment systems, not through our contact email.
