How the HD Careers Resume Matcher Works

The matcher is designed to answer one narrow question: how closely does the text in your resume align with the requirements shown on an HD Careers job page?

Privacy: supported resume files are read in your browser. The matching feature does not need to upload the resume contents to an HD Careers candidate account or employer system.

The three components

SkillsMatch

Looks for listed skills and supported synonyms or related terms in resume text.

ExperienceRelevance

Uses detected employment date ranges and the role's stated experience requirement when that requirement is meaningful.

QualificationAlignment

Compares education/qualification text with requirements published on the job page.

Why the score is not an ATS score

Employers can use proprietary ranking models, knockout questions, recruiter review, assessments and internal criteria that HD Careers cannot see. Our score therefore cannot reproduce or predict an employer's ATS decision. It is a preparation aid.

Why a low score can still be useful

A low score can reveal missing terminology, but it does not automatically mean you are ineligible. A resume may describe the same capability using different language, a parser may miss context, or the employer may value transferable experience that cannot be represented by a keyword comparison.

How to use the result responsibly

  1. Check whether the extracted resume text is correct.
  2. Review missing skills and add only skills you genuinely have.
  3. Connect important skills to evidence: project, task, result or responsibility.
  4. Verify the employer's stated eligibility yourself.
  5. Never invent experience just to increase a score.

Known limitations

PDF layout, scanned files, abbreviations, overlapping employment dates and ambiguous qualifications can affect results. The matcher intentionally avoids pretending to know employer-specific weighting or hidden selection criteria.
